요한복음에서 예수의 반대자들은 그를 이스라엘의 거짓 교사이자 기만자로 대한다. 이러한 관점에서, 요한복음 11:47–53절의 산헤드린 공회 소집을 정치적 실용주의의 서술로 보는 통상적인 해석은 재고되어야 한다. 이는 유대 지도자들이 신학적으로나 정치적으로 동기 부여된 예수에 대한 반대를 표명하고 실행할 수 있도록 하기 위함이다. 만약 이 해석이 옳다면, 제4복음서는 "유대인"이 예수를 거부한 가장 지속적인 이유 중 하나를 직접적으로 다룬다.
In the Gospel of John, Jesus’s opponents interact with him as a false teacher and deceiver of Israel. From this perspective, the standard interpretation of the gathering of the Sanhedrin in John 11:47–53 as a description of political pragmatism must be rethought in order to allow for the Jewish leaders to express and enact an opposition to Jesus that is both theologically and politically motivated. If this reading is correct, then the Fourth Gospel engages directly with one of the most persistent reasons that “the Jews” rejected Jesus.
