요한계시록 13장 18절의 666을 설명하기 위해 고대와 중세에 걸쳐 다양한 견해들이 제시되었다. 그동안 간과되었던 사라피스(Sarapis)에 대한 암시를 제외하면 만족스러운 제안은 거의 없으며, 현대 학계의 통설(communis opinio)은 이것이 네로(Nero)를 가리킨다는 것이다. 본 논문은 기존의 추측들에 대한 광범위한 조사와 평가를 거친 뒤, 666이 클라우디우스(Claudian) 황실의 알려지지 않은 후계자를 의미한다는 새로운 가설을 제안하고자 한다. 이는 'Κλαυδίας(클라우디아스)'라는 이름의 각 철자 함숫값(gematria)을 합산한 결과에 근거한다.
Various suggestions were made in Antiquity and the Middle Ages to explain the 666 of Revelation 13:18. Few of them are satisfactory, except perhaps for a neglected allusion to Sarapis, and the modern communis opinio is that it refers to Nero. After presenting an extensive survey and evaluation of previous guesses, I propose instead that 666 concerns an unknown heir to the imperial Claudian family, as the sum of the values of each letter in the name Κλαυδίας.
