토빗서에서 개의 존재는 수수께끼 같은 서사적 세부 사항이다. 본 연구는 신의 섭리의 관점에서 이야기 속 개의 존재를 검토하며, 이야기에 부여된 기능을 수행하는 개의 존재가 보이지 않는 현실, 즉 신의 섭리의 선구자이자 담지자인 신적 창조 질서가 비록 숨겨진 방식일지라도 여전히 유효함을 시사할 수 있다고 주장한다. 서사 속에서 신의 섭리를 의인화한 변장한 라파엘처럼, 이야기 속 개의 등장은 하나님의 백성을 향한 그분의 생명 부여적이고 섭리적인 의도가 지속적으로 살아 있음을 보여주는 숨겨진 암시로 간주될 수 있다.

The presence of the dog is a puzzling narrative detail in the Book of Tobit. This study examines the canine presence in the story in light of divine providence and argues that the presence of the dog playing its assigned function in the story can point to the unseen reality that the divine creative order, which is the harbinger and bearer of divine providence, continues to hold albeit in hidden ways. Like the disguised Raphael, who personifies divine providence in the narrative, the inclusion of the dog in the story can be viewed as a concealed indication of the enduring aliveness of God’s life-giving and providential intentions for his people.
