This essay judges Kirk’s study to obscure the narrative Christologies of the Synoptics more than it illumines them, exhibiting the pitfalls of exegesis inattentive to three interrelated disciplines: recent hermeneutical developments, literary and historical details in the texts under discussion, and the church’s precise theological grammar.
