이 논문은 성경 해석에서 영적인 의미에 따른 해석을 건설적인 신학 작업에 도움이 되고 수용 가능한 방식으로 적용해야 한다고 주장한다. 토마스 아퀴나스의 연구와 사상에 어느 정도 기반을 두고, 폴 리쾨르의 비유적 언어와 사변적 담론에 대한 제안을 상당히 활용하여, 이 논문의 주요 논지는 영적인 의미에 따라 해석할 때, 성경의 내용 자체가 기호 체계로 기능하며, 이를 통해 해석자는 문자적 언어의 의미론적 능력을 넘어 하나님에 대해 의미 있게 이야기하려는 시도를 할 수 있다는 것이다.

This paper argues for the appropriation of interpretation of the Scriptures according to the spritual sense as a helpful and acceptable way of engaging in constructive theology. Grounded to a degree in the work and thought of Thomas Aquinas, and drawing significantly on Paul Ricoeur's suggestions regarding figurative language and speculative discourse, the primary thesis of the paper is that when interpreting according to the spiritual sense, the content of Scripture itself functions as a semiotic system allowing the interpreter to press beyond the semantic capabilities of literal language in an attempt to speak meaningfully about God.
