English summary
Tobias Hägerland reanalyses the Greek syntax of 1 Timothy 4.1-5. He treats the description of hypocritical teachers who prohibit marriage as a parenthesis and connects the infinitive concerning food abstinence with the preceding reference to demonic teachings. Marriage prohibition characterises the teachers, while dietary abstinence is the teaching directly challenged here. This reading explains the subsequent emphasis on food, thanksgiving, and prayer without requiring the conventional appeal to zeugma.
