삼손의 수수께끼(사사기 14:14)는 수천 년 동안 해석의 영감을 제공해 왔다. 라이벌 정착지에서 열린 결혼 잔치 중에 제시된 이 חידה(히다, 수수께끼)라는 지식 대결은 사사기 14장에 담긴 민속 전승의 구조를 이루는 적합한 문학적 장치다. 그러나 학계는 문학적 세부에 집중하는 과정에서, 이 민담이 스스로 전제하는 문자 이전 시대의 지정학적 배경을 중요하게 다루지 못했다. 본 논문은 이 이야기가 기원전 2천 년기 말 소렉 계곡에서 벌어진 영토적 긴장을 경쟁 주제로 활용하며, 당대 정착촌 사이의 사회적 갈등을 환기시켜 흥미롭고 사회적으로 의미 있는 수수께끼 도전을 구성하고 있음을 주장한다.
Samson’s riddle (Judg 14:14) has inspired interpretation for millennia. Told during a wedding feast in a rival settlement, the knowledge contest of the חידה is an apposite literary feature around which the folklore found in Judg 14 is structured. But while the natural object of study is this written witness to the tale in the Hebrew text, in concentrating on literary details, scholarship has tended to relegate the significance of the preliterate geopolitical setting that the folktale claims for itself. It is this paper’s claim that the story exploits the territorial tension of the late second millennium BCE Sorek Valley in its contest theme, evoking contemporary social struggles among the settlements to construct an engaging and socially relevant riddle challenge.
