교부들의 성경 해석에 대한 학문적 연구는 상당히 증가했다. 하지만 현대 주석 저자들은 교부들의 성경 해석에 거의 영향을 받지 않는다. 이러한 영향력 부족은 여러 요인에서 비롯된다. 대부분의 주석은 역사-비평 분석이라는 현대적 전통에 의해 형성된 성서학자들이 쓴다. 주석을 쓰는 소수의 신학자들은 개념적 추상화 경향이 있는 자신만의 현대적 사고 습관을 가지고 있다. 두 유형의 현대 학자들은 모두 교부들과는 다른 성경에 대한 가정과 해석의 목적을 갖는 경향이 있다. 교부들의 해석적 천재성을 회복하려면 최소한 부분적으로라도 그들의 가정을 받아들여야 한다. 이것은 지적인 도전일 뿐만 아니라 영적인 도전이기도 하다.

Scholarly study of the biblical exegesis of the church fathers has increased significantly. However, authors of contemporary commentaries are little influenced by patristic exegesis. This lack of influence flows from a number of factors. Most commentaries are written by biblical scholars who are formed by the modern tradition of historical-critical analysis. The few theologians who write commentaries have their own modern habits of mind that tend toward conceptual abstraction. Both types of modern scholar tend to make different assumptions about the Bible and the purposes of exegesis than did the church fathers. Recovering the exegetical genius of the church fathers requires adopting their assumptions, as least in part. This is as much a spiritual as an intellectual challenge.
