어휘학자들은 성서 및 쿰란 문헌에 나타난 '가알(גאל)'의 용례들 가운데서 두 개의 동음이의 어근을 식별해 왔다. 이러한 분석에 따르면, '가알 II'는 얼룩짐(staining), 모독(desecration), 그리고/또는 부정(defilement, 더럽혀짐)을 내포한다. 본 논문은 히브리 성서와 사해 사본에 등장하는 '가알 II'의 용례들을 재검토하며, 이러한 새로운 분석을 바탕으로 이 어근의 핵심 의미론(core semantics)이 '부정'이 아니라 '감소(diminishment)'와 관련이 있다고 주장한다.
Lexicographers have identified among the biblical and Qumran attestations of גאל two homophonous roots. According to this analysis, גאל II connotes staining, desecration, and/or defilement. This article reassesses the examples of גאל II in the Hebrew Bible and the Dead Sea Scrolls and, based upon this new analysis, argues that the core semantics of this root concern diminishment, not defilement.
