본 논문은 히브리서 2:11, 17에 나타난 ‘형제’(ἀδελφός)의 의미와배경에 관해 연구한다. 기존 학자들은 이것을 동료 인간으로 이해하고, ‘형제라 불리우기를 부끄러워하지 않으심’(히 2:11), ‘형제들과같이 되심’(2:17)과 같은 표현을 그리스도께서 인간이 되신 것으로이해한다. 그러나 히브리서에서 δελφοί가 등장하는 문맥은 이스라엘의 이야기(혹은 광야공동체의 이야기)이며, 아브라함의 자손(2:16) 을 지칭하기도 한다. 또한 그 단어는 다양한 유대문헌에서 하나님백성 혹은 동료 이스라엘을 지칭한다. 따라서 예수께서 형제들과 같이 되심은 성육신, 즉 그리스도께서 인간이 되심일 뿐 아니라 하나님백성 되심이라는 함의를 지닌다. 그리스도의 죽음, 고난과 시험도 한인간으로서만이 아니라 하나님 백성의 일원으로서 경험하신 것이다. 따라서 히브리서에서 고난은 약속의 땅으로 향하는 하나님 백성으로서의 경험이다.
This article explores the background and the meaning of sibling ( δελφός) language in Heb 2:11, 17. Commentators have taken such phrases as “not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters” (2:11) and “to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect” (2:17) to mean Christ’s becoming a human being. Yet the sibling language in Heb 2:11, 17 appears in the context of the story of Israel or the descendants of Abraham (2:16). Moreover its usage in the Old Testament and Jewish literature shows that it often signifies a fellow- Israelite. Therefore “to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect” (2:17) means not merely the incarnation of Christ (becoming a human being), but also becoming a member of God’s people. Thus, δελφός in Heb 2:11, 17 should be considered as a fellow member of God’s people rather than the universal humanity.
