Using Joel Green’s contribution as a starting point, this essay examines the background and implications of the language of “new birth” in 1 Peter. It surveys selected passages from Scripture and other Jewish literature to highlight the affinities between these texts and 1 Peter. It demonstrates that the similarities are not limited to the linguistic use of new birth and other related metaphors. These texts share a larger pool of conceptual themes that are characteristic of texts about Israel’s election, its exilic and diasporic existence, and God’s saving acts on behalf of his people.
