Samuel Privara examines mission among people in the post-Christian West who have distanced themselves from institutional religion while remaining open to spiritual questions. Drawing on Karl Rahner, Richard Lennan, and Pope Francis, he relates synodality to spiritual accompaniment. Shared discernment, attentive listening, and responsibility inform the church’s encounter with these seekers. Accompaniment involves responding to their questions while respecting freedom and helping them develop their own capacity for discernment. The article discusses spiritual fruit, patience, and formation toward responsibility, with the seeker’s autonomy remaining important throughout. Privara also argues that the church learns from these encounters. Mission at its margins can therefore contribute to the church’s own continuing conversion and renewal.
