Newbigin's missiology, ecclesiology, apologetics, and public theology have been widely studied. His contribution to spirituality has received much less attention. Anthony J. Stiff locates that contribution within Newbigin's theology of mission to Western culture and his engagement with narrative theology. The article first relates Newbigin to H. Richard Niebuhr, Hans Frei, and George Lindbeck. It then examines The Open Secret, Foolishness to the Greeks, and The Gospel in a Pluralist Society. Across these works, biblical narrative forms the believer's perception of God, self, and world while also shaping a public and communal way of life. The church rehearses this story in worship, embodies it in shared discipleship, and encounters neighboring cultural and religious narratives from within it. Stiff describes this union of inward formation and outward witness as Newbigin's missional narrative spirituality.
