효종대에 하도감(下都監)을 설치한 이후부터 19세기 말까지 군인들과 상인들의 거주지인 연화방(蓮花坊) 연못골에 설립된 연동교회는 한성부 내 동부지역에 세워진 첫 번째 장로교회라는 역사적 의의와, 1904년에 양반 관료들이 출석하면서 교인층이 변화하는 특징을 가지고 있다. 1894년 8월 말에서 11월 초 사이에 예배 처소로 시작해서 1895년에 정식 교회가 된 연동교회와 직접 관련이 있는 선교사는 그래함 리·밀러·기포드·빈턴 등이다. 그중에 기포드는 1895년 12월 이전에 연동교회의 첫 번째 담임목사로 임명되어 중간에 치료를 위해 미국에 가기도 했지만 1900년 4월 10일에 세상을 떠날 때까지 재직했다. 초기 연동교회의 교인들 중에는 무관이나 경무직(警務職) 출신은 거의 없고 상인이나 천민 계층의 사람들이 많았다. 그러나 1907년 연동교회 사찰위원의 명단을 보면, 전체 31명 중 26명이 북부지역에 거주하고, 전현직 관리 출신이 다수를 이루고 있다. 이것은 1904년에 김정식·이상재·이원긍·유성준·홍재기 등 양반 관료들이 출석한 이후로 비슷한 계층의 사람들의 교회 출석이 증가하면서 양반 관료들이 교회 안에서 수적으로는 소수였지만 지도적인 위상이나 역할을 하게 된 것을 보여주는 것이기도 하다. 이런 변화는 교인들 사이에 신분 갈등을 일으키는 요인으로 작용하기도 했다.
Yeondong Church, which began as a chapel between late August and early November 1894 and formally became a church in 1895, has the historical significance of being the first Presbyterian Church in the eastern part of Hanseongbu. It was established in Yeonhwabang(蓮花坊) Yeonmotgol(Lotus Pond Village) with the residence of soldiers and merchants from the establishment of Hadogam(下都監) in King Hyojong’s reign to the end of the 19th century. In 1904, as yangban officials started attended the church, the class composition of church members changed. Missionaries directly related to the Yeondong Church included Graham Lee, Miller, Gifford, and Vinton. Among them, Gifford was appointed as the first senior pastor of Yeondong Church before December 1895. He went to the United States for treatment while in office, but he served until he passed away on April 10, 1900. Among the members of Yeondong Church in the early days, few were military officers or police officers, but there were many merchants or people from the lower classes. Conversely, if you look at the list of members of the inspection committee of Yeondong Church in 1907, the members consisted of 26 out of 31 people living in the northern region, and the majority were former and current officials. Since yangban officials such as Kim Jeong-sik, Lee Sang-jae, Lee Won-geung, Yu Seong-jun, and Hong Jae-gi attended this church in 1904, the church attendance by people from similar classes increased. At this time, yangban officials played a leading role in the church although they were few in number. It is also to shown that this change also served as a factor that caused conflict of status among the church members.
