Large language models increasingly shape how users encounter sacred and culturally normative knowledge. In this setting, a plausible answer may appear institutionally or morally authoritative even when technical accuracy has not established a legitimate right to interpret. Drawing on science and technology studies and digital religion scholarship, the authors follow authority across the AI pipeline. They examine corpus and canon selection, annotation and prompting, model alignment, platform distribution, and institutional review. They argue that interpretive authority emerges from recognized procedures of authorization and communal validation rather than from computational capability alone. The article therefore proposes the Minimum Reporting Standards for Digital Analysis of Sacred Texts (MRS-DST). This standard calls for disclosure of textual provenance and human-machine responsibilities. It also requires reports on algorithmic limits, validation routes, and ethical oversight. Under this approach, AI assists analysis while human scholars and institutions retain interpretive judgment and accountability.
