English summary
Jee Hae Lee compares the Lausanne Movement’s four Core Documents and selected Occasional Papers from 1974 to 2024. The study traces how they address women’s participation in mission. Lee identifies developments in the Manila Manifesto and Cape Town Commitment after the relative silence of the Lausanne Covenant. Lee judges the Seoul Statement to represent a retreat, directing attention toward perceived external challenges involving sex and gender. The article argues that accommodating both egalitarian and complementarian positions has led the movement to prioritize institutional unity over fuller participation by women. It also criticizes the limits that complementarianism places on ministry. These are the author’s critical assessments of the documents and their implications for Lausanne’s missionary commitments.
