Charismatic renewal and radical Christianity emerged almost simultaneously across the Anglo-world during the long 1960s, and both invoked the image of a new Reformation. One sought a renewed experience of the Spirit's supernatural presence, while the other reworked Christian belief for a modern and often demythologized worldview. Using movement publications and archival records from key participants, John Maiden compares these apparently opposed projects. He argues that both responded to a shared sense that churches were failing amid political, cultural, and religious crisis. Their ontological and epistemological disagreements remained substantial, yet both were shaped by eschatological expectation and distinct forms of pneumatological concern. The study also traces unexpected contacts between the movements and considers how liberal missiologists and ecumenists interpreted Spirit-oriented growth in majority-world Christianity. This comparison complicates a simple liberal-charismatic divide and helps explain the movements' later trajectories.
