For over 75 years Gustav Aulén's Christus Victor: An Historical Study of the Three Main Types of the Atonement has stimulated reflection on the "models" by which Christians understand the saving work of Jesus Christ. This paper argues that each of the canonical Gospels tends toward and emphasizes a particular model of the atonement, three of which are essentially congruent with the typology constructed by Aulén. I reflect critically on Aulén's work and the scholarship that it has generated, but my primary focus is exegetical. I conclude that Christian theology is well served by the variety of perspectives on the atonement that are found in the Gospels in a way that is analogous to the benefits of the fourfold Gospels' "takes" on Jesus.
