이 논문은 미국 남장로회 내한 선교사들의 선교기록물들 가운데 연례 선교회의록에 수록된 75건의 추도문 중에서 1892년부터 1938년까지 46년간 수록된 여성 선교사 49명의 추도문을 연구한 것이다. 추도문은 동료 선교사가 고인이 된 선교사를 추억하며 작성한 것이다. 그동안 여성 선교사들은 남성 선교사들에 비해 주목받지 못했고 연구가 충분히 진행되지 못했다. 여성 선교사 중에서도 미국 남장로회 내한 여성 선교사에 대한 연구는 몇몇 선교사에 한정되어 있어 상당히 미진하고 기존의 연구는 대부분이 선교사에 대한 개별 연구이다. 여성 선교사에 대한 연구가 미진한 것에 비해, 동료 선교사들이 작성한 추도문은 여성 선교사가 49건으로 26건인 남성 선교사보다 2배 가까이 많았다는 점에서 주목할 만하다. 기존의 여성 선교사 연구가 개별 연구에 그쳤다면 본 연구는 추도문이라는 공통된 주제를 가지고 여성 선교사들을 살펴보았다는 점과 추도문을 통계적으로 분석하여 여성 선교사들의 선교와 삶을 추적했다는 점에 차별성이 있다. 또한 추도문은 선교의 성과에 초점을 맞추기보다는 고인이 된 선교사의 삶을 추억하기 위해 쓰여졌기 때문에 읽는 이로 하여금 해당 선교사의 인간적인 면모, 성품, 선교 방식 등을 추정해보고 다양하게 해석할 수 있는 가능성을 열어준다. 추도문을 통해 여성 선교사들의 선교 정보를 통계적으로 분석해보고, 선교사로 일평생 살았던 그들의 삶속에서 복음전파의 사명이 어떻게 표출되고 실천되었는지, 한국을 사랑했던 그들의 헌신과 예수님을 닮고자 애썼던 그들의 삶을 조명하였다.
This study examines the eulogies titled “In Memoriam” of the 49 women missionaries who were among the 75 eulogies in the Minutes of the Annual Meeting of the Southern Presbyterian Mission in Korea from 1892 to 1938. Earlier studies on Western Missionaries have focused on male missionaries, and there are very few studies about the Southern Presbyterian Women Missionaries of the U. S. The fellow missionaries have recorded the work and life of 49 women missionaries who were their contemporaries. These are almost two times more than the male missionaries’ eulogies. This study analyzes the eulogies statistically and traces their works and lives through the statistical analysis. It also focuses on the features and common points of women missionaries mentioned in eulogies and not on their achievements or personal history. In the given plethora of information about the missionaries what stands out in their stories is their Christlike character of faithfulness amid their missionary living. This study examines how their Christlike character was revealed in their personal lives and translated into their mission work. This study presents the statistical analysis about their eulogies and attempts to illuminate the lives of these women missionaries and their Christlike character and the way they displayed their love for Korean people and in return how they had been loved.
