김교신은 강한 유교적 전통 속에 어린 시절을 보냈다. 함흥의 부유한 양반가 출신인 그는 보통학교에 입학할 때까지 한학을 배웠다. 따라서 그는 기독교인이 된 이후에도 『논어』를 비롯한 유교 경서와 한문 고전을 자유롭게 인용할 수 있었다. 김교신은 한학을 공부할 때 공자를 극히 공경하여 그를 삶의 모범으로 삼았다. 그는 공자처럼 수양을 통해 성인이 되고자 온 몸과 정성을 다해 노력했던 유자였다. 심지어 그는 공자가 말한 모든 것을 지키고 행해서, 공자보다 10년 앞서 공자가 도달했던 완성된 경지에 이르고자 했다. 그러나 성인이 된 이후 김교신은 자신이 아무리 노력해도 공자와 같은 성인이 될 수 없다는 것을 깨닫고 깊이 번뇌했다. 그 번뇌 속에 그는 기독교에 입문했다. 기독교인이 된 이후에도 김교신은 유자적 가치와 자세, 생활습관을 그대로 유지했다. 그가 사사한 우치무라 간조의 신학이 그렇게 할 수 있는 길을 열어주었기 때문일 것이다. 우치무라에게 배운 후 김교신은 우치무라가 주창한 “복음적 유자”가 되었다. 복음적 유자란 독립적이고 자존심 있는 선비적 품성을 유지한 채 서재에 머물러 성서 공부에 몰두하고, 찾아오는 사람들에게 그 진리를 가르치는 사람이다. 김교신이 행한 것이 바로 그러했다. 그는 자신의 서재를 성소로, 성서를 경서로, 그리고 자신을 훈장으로 여겼다. 그가 성경을 공부하고 가르친 방식도 유자적이었다. 김교신은 우치무라의 제자들 가운데 복음적 유자의 이상을 가장 모범적으로 실천한 사람이었다.
Kim Gyo Shin was raised in a rich yangban family at Hamheung with a strong Confucian tradition. He had studied Confucian classics until he entered a modern elementary school, and was able to liberally cite Confucian-Chinese classics even after converting to Christianity. When studying Confucian classics, he admired Confucius so much that he set Confucius as an model of life. As a young, staunch Confucian scholar, Kim did everything he could in order to become a sage like Confucius. He was determined to reach the Confucius’s level ten years earlier than Confucius by practicing everything Confucius told his disciples to do. However, as getting older Kim realized that he was unable to be like Confucius, which made him extremely anguished. This led him to Christianity. Being a Christian, Kim retained his Confucian values, attitudes, and habits. His teacher Uchimura Kanzo apparently showed him a way to do so. Kim became an “evangelical Confusianist” as Uchimura asserted. An evangelical Confucianist was a Christian teacher who held the independent and proud character of Confucian scholar, remained in his library devoting himself on studying the scriptures, and taught only whose who voluntarily came to him. That was exactly what Kim Gyo Shin did. He considered his library his sanctum, the Bible classics, and himself teacher of classics. His way of studying and teaching the Bible was also Confucianistic. Kim Gyo Shin was the most exemplary evangelical Confucianist among Uchimura’s disciples.
